Elias Jorge Manhiga teaches at the Pfungurene Primary School in the Maputo Province, where his students have been receiving daily school meals. "With this program we've reduced the number of dropouts," he says. "The food is so welcome."
In addition to the school meals component, the Food for Knowledge Project trains teachers, educates communities about proper nutrition, establishes school gardens, and constructs or refurbishes school sanitation and kitchen facilities. The Project has been extended from its original 3.5-year term to run through 2020. In total, 82 million meals will be served to more than 80,000 children in the region.
