Get a Donation Tax Receipt for Donated Clothes | Planet Aid

Written by Planet Aid, Inc. | Jan 8, 2026

Disclaimer: This article was originally published in 2015. It has been reviewed and updated for accuracy in January 2026 to reflect the most current IRS guidelines and fair market value estimates for donated goods.

Donating your used clothing, shoes, or household textiles to Planet Aid is a great way to reduce waste and support global development, and you may also qualify for a tax deduction. To take advantage of this benefit, you’ll need a donation tax receipt and a fair estimate of the value of the items you donated.

How to Get Your Donation Tax Receipt

After you've dropped off a bag of clothes, shoes, or household textiles in one of our yellow Planet Aid bins, make sure to go to our website to easily get a donation tax receipt by filling out our simple form.

When determining the value of your donation, keep in mind that the IIRS only allows a deduction for items that are still in reasonably good condition.

If you have clothes or shoes that are no longer wearable, Planet Aid will still accept them so that they can be repurposed and spared from the landfill, but you won't be able to receive a tax deduction for those specific items.

Determining the Value of Your Donation

The IRS does not set specific values for used clothing and household items. Instead, donors must determine the fair market value—the price a willing buyer would pay for the item in its current condition.

To help you estimate, use the IRS guide for Determining the Value of Donated Property Publication 561 as your official reference.

Below is a guide based on commonly donated items and their typical fair market values. These are suggested ranges and can vary based on condition, brand, and demand.

Have a Bulk Donation That May Be Valued at Over $500?

If you're donating a large quantity of clothing, shoes, or household textiles and believe the total fair market value exceeds $500, the IRS may require additional documentation to claim your deduction.

You may need to complete IRS Form 8283 for noncash charitable contributions. In some cases, an official appraisal may also be necessary.
