Children's Day in Mozambique is observed on the first of June to honor the country's children. Planet Aid's Food for Knowledge Project celebrated early on May 18 with performances and activities for young students in southern Mozambique.
The Food for Knowledge Project is a child-centered initiative that serves daily school meals to approximately 70,000 school children. Other facets of the program include establishing school gardens, creating literacy clubs, training teachers, constructing sanitation facilities and kitchens, and building local capacity.
In the town of Manhiça, about 1,500 students from Food for Knowledge schools, 30 teachers, 23 orphans from a local program, and 10 Food for Knowledge staff members gathered in a main square. Children were treated to performances and games throughout the morning and provided a free lunch before the festivities ended in the afternoon.
Another smaller celebration took place at the Marrumbana Primary School in the town of Calanga.
