What is Child Bedlessness?

On this episode of Sustainable Solutions with Planet Aid, hosts Monica Johnson and Haley Chitty speak with Luke Mickelson, founder of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit working to end child bedlessness by building and delivering beds to children who need them most.  Bedlessness is not a word you can find in a dictionary, but it accounts for at least 3 percent of the population in any given town.

The podcast's conversation begins with a simple but powerful truth: no child should have to sleep on the floor, and a bed is far more than furniture — it is a source of comfort, dignity, and stability.

Mickelson explains that the inspiration for Sleep in Heavenly Peace came from a local need in his own community. When a church leader mentioned a family whose children were sleeping on the concrete floor with only blankets and pillows, he was stunned.  That moment stayed with him, and it became the spark for a movement that would grow far beyond his hometown in Idaho. What began as one bed for one family became a mission built on service, local action, and the belief that communities can solve problems together.

Creating a Local Model for Local Impact

The episode shows how a small act of care can grow into a lasting solution. Mickelson describes how he and a group of Boy Scouts built the first bed and then delivered it to the family with support from the community. That experience revealed something bigger than the project itself: it gave volunteers a chance to serve hands-on while directly improving a child’s life. Over time, that model expanded into a nationwide network of chapters, all focused on helping children sleep safely and comfortably in their own beds.

One of the most compelling themes in the conversation is that child bedlessness is about much more than sleep. Mickelson says, "A bed should not be a luxury for kids." He also notes that the lack of a bed affects children physically, socially, and emotionally. Without proper rest, children may struggle in school, have trouble focusing, and fall behind their peers. He also emphasizes that a bed can be a child’s safe place — a private space where they can rest, feel secure, and recharge. In that sense, a bed becomes a symbol of care and belonging.

Avoiding 'Mission Creep'

The episode also highlights why Sleep in Heavenly Peace has been so effective: it keeps the mission simple and local. Chapters are encouraged to meet community needs directly, with nearly all donated support staying in the area where it is raised. Volunteers do not need special skills, just a willingness to help, and that accessibility has allowed the organization to grow rapidly. Mickelson says this model works because it gives people a meaningful way to serve while keeping the focus on one clear goal: making sure no child sleeps on the floor.

From Awareness to Action

By the end of the conversation, the message is clear. Ending child bedlessness takes awareness, action, and community commitment. “The story about child bedlessness is priceless, because it is a need out there that no one, including myself 14 years ago, had any idea that it existed in the concentration that it does,” Mickelson states.

Sustainable solutions are not always technical or complicated — sometimes they begin with a bed, a volunteer, and a community that decides to care. It also takes a willingness to see these  children’s needs as urgent and real, even when those needs are often hidden in plain sight.
