Beyond Volunteering: James Edwards’ Journey to Community Impact

Planet Aid’s People 2 People Volunteer program transforms the way individuals connect with communities, turning passion into lasting impact. Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming James Edwards to our Maryland office to share the story of his 10-month journey of service, learning, and real-world change.

James’ adventure began with an immersive three-month training at Richmond Vale Academy in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, where he gained the skills, knowledge, and perspective needed to make a difference abroad. From there, he spent six months in Malawi with Development Aid People to People (DAPP), contributing to projects that strengthened education, improved health, and empowered communities. His journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when dedication meets opportunity—and an invitation for others to step in and be part of the change.

One of the key projects James supported in DAPP involved improving the educational infrastructure of six rural preschools serving children ages 3–6. As part of this effort, he helped establish vegetable gardens designed to provide daily nutritious meals for students—supporting both their health and their ability to learn.

James and his team also worked closely with preschool caregivers, organizing and leading weekend teacher training sessions. These trainings provided practical tools and strategies to strengthen early childhood education in underserved communities.

In addition to working with young children, James collaborated with students and staff at the Teacher Training College in Dowa, operated by DAPP Malawi. There, he helped deliver courses covering:

  • The urgency and importance of education
  • Fundraising and resource mobilization
  • Job readiness and employment skills
  • Media skills, including photography and video creation
These sessions were designed to equip future educators with both the mindset and practical tools needed to succeed—and to better serve their communities. Imagine what you could achieve by joining a project like this!

James’s work extended beyond the classroom. His group organized cultural evenings twice a month, creating space for connection, exchange, and celebration.

They also led weekly sports activities with students and teachers, promoting health, teamwork, and engagement.

In nearby communities, James supported trainings tailored to local needs, including:

  • English as a foreign language
  • Basic health and wellness
  • Life skills and advocacy
James’s journey in Malawi was a hands-on experience with lasting impact. Over six months, he supported Development Aid People to People (DAPP), a well-established local program, working alongside educators and caregivers to strengthen preschools, improve children’s health, and support learning initiatives.

“Oppression or disconnection for one continent, unfortunately, means oppression and disconnection for us all.”

He also emphasized the ongoing need for support and action:

“Our team volunteered in Malawi for six months, and there is just so much more to do. You are hereby invited to follow in my footsteps,” he said.

And James didn’t hold back his call to others:

“People around the world, I encourage you. In Malawi, children and educators are calling on you to soften your heart and make a commitment to improve the quality of education in rural Malawi.”

Through his words, James turns his personal journey into an invitation: a chance for others to join in, connect, and make a meaningful difference.

Step in and make an impact!

James’s journey shows the incredible impact one person can have on lasting, community-driven development. From enhancing preschool infrastructure to training future educators and connecting with local communities, his work embodies the mission of Planet Aid’s People 2 People Volunteer program.

Now it’s your turn. Planet Aid invites you to join communities in creating positive change—bringing your skills, energy, and ideas to support efforts that matter. Real impact happens when people come together, collaborate, and take action.
