Planet Aid's Earth Day Clothing Drive Amplifies How Small Steps Make A Difference
April 22-29
Earth Day Clothing Drive
Take a small step to reduce textile waste!
Planet Aid's week-long Earth Day clothing drive has concluded, and the results are in. In just one week (April 22 -April 29), Planet Aid donors helped to collect 1,652,241 pounds of textiles. That's approximately 50,000 pounds more than the week before. Thank you to every donor who made time to drop off a bag of clothing to support the drive. Your donation is tax-deductible, so don't forget to generate your receipt.
Even though the Earth Day clothing drive is over, we are still challenging individuals, communities, businesses, nonprofits, and other organizations to continue to donate clothes and shoes instead of throwing them away. Use one of our convenient yellow bins, donation centers, or mail your donation with Give Back Box.
Usable clothes are reusable, which makes them a valuable resource for people and the planet.
Here are 6 ways your clothing donations help.
- reduces carbon emissions
- diverts textiles from the landfills
- fuels the circular economy by supporting job growth
- reduces manufacturing demands
- slows the effects of fast fashion and new textile consumption
- conserves water and other natural resources
The fashion industry wreaks havoc on the environment, consuming vast amounts of limited resources and generating immense pollution and waste. Americans discard 17 million pounds of textiles annually, with 66% ending up in landfills.
Beyond environmental harm, fast fashion exploits workers. Brands are notorious for underpaying and overworking employees.
The good news? We can take simple steps together to dramatically reduce the harm caused by the fashion industry. Planet Aid makes it easy to donate clothes and shoes to be reused. This keeps the clothes out of U.S. landfills and incinerators and helps fuel a growing secondhand textile industry. Reusing clothes also helps to reduce the demand for new clothes.
Planet Aid is a nonprofit organization; proceeds from the sale of donated clothes and shoes fund vital programs working to strengthen communities through education, health and wellness, and agricultural and environmental sustainability.
