The Genesis of MeetGreen®
Nancy J. Zavada founded MeetGreen in 1994, driven by the realization of the massive waste generated by large conferences. Her mission was to transform the meetings industry by integrating sustainable practices, starting with eliminating Styrofoam and moving towards reusable solutions.
Zavada explained, "What really got me started thinking about this and the breadth of this is I was planning a meeting for one of those tech conferences and we went to a city and the city said, we only have styrofoam cups and plates. This is back in 94. I said, 'Well, I can't serve Styrofoam cups.'"
Asked how the situation was resolved, Zavada answered: "In that meeting space, we brought in paper products." She added, "This isn't 100%. It's never going to be, but it's small steps along the way."
Why Sustainability Matters
In the discussion, Zavada expressed the vastness of the meetings industry, with billions spent annually on travel alone. Sustainable events offer economic and environmental benefits, aligning with the values of attendees who are increasingly concerned about the planet.Zavada highlighted how, in today’s digital age, a single image of an excessive, untouched buffet can rapidly gain attention online—demonstrating the power of social media to amplify both good intentions and missed opportunities. She underscored the necessity for organizations to practice sustainability consistently, ensuring eco-friendly commitments are fully reflected in every event detail.
Companies that embrace eco-friendly practices not only save costs but also enhance their reputation as industry leaders.
Practical Steps for Sustainable Events
With over 30 years of sustainable event planning know-how, Zavada's company, MeetGreen, works within its blueprint for efficient, cost-effective, sustainable events. Here are four takeaways she shared when planning an event.
Reduce and Reuse- Avoid unnecessary swag and opt for reusable items.
- Ask attendees if they need event merchandise to minimize waste.
- Implement strategies like the Clean Plate Club to encourage minimal food waste.
- Opt for plant-based, locally sourced menus.
- Choose venues with renewable energy sources and energy-efficient lighting.
- Simple actions like turning off lights can make a difference.
Transportation
Consider virtual or hybrid events to reduce travel emissions. (If in-person, select venues with accessible public transport options.)
The Future of Sustainable Events
Sustainability in event planning is not a trend but a necessity. As Nancy highlights, the industry has made significant strides, but there's more to be done. Sustainable event planning is a journey of continuous improvement. By adopting eco-friendly practices, planners not only contribute to a healthier planet but also create memorable experiences for attendees.
