Planet Aid has supported Humana People to People (HPP) Laos' community development initiatives in the Bolikhamxay Province since 2011.
Laos has a high tuberculosis (TB) burden and is one of the countries in South East Asia with the highest prevalence of TB, with an incidence of 182 per 100,000, and a death rate of 53 per 100,000.
In March 2018, HPP Laos signed an agreement with the Department of Health Bolikhamxay Province to focus on screening for TB in 57 focus villages. The project, which is receiving support from Planet Aid, works closely with the Lao Health Department. So far, more than 10,000 were screened and 350 individuals were found to have symtpoms of TB; 7 have been confirmed positive.
The project is also continuing to spread awareness of TB and has reached more than 12,000 people with TB information.
The Child Aid program is comprised of more than 2,000 member families across 14 villages in the Bolikhan District and Bolikhamxay Province. One of the biggest successes of this project is the improvement of maternal and infant health in the Bolikhan District. The Child Aid program works to educate expectant mothers on how to care for themselves, boosting the clinic-visitation rates to 80 percent.
Other aspects of the program include water and sanitation improvement, proper handwashing lessons, nutrition education (in part through the establishment of home gardens), animal husbandry, and family budgeting. Read more about Child Aid.
